-
How long is a consultation?Initial full-length consultations are scheduled for 75 minutes of dedicated time with our specialty pharmacist. Follow-up consultations are scheduled for 45 minutes. Occasionally, a second full-hour consultation may be indicated if we have a lot to discuss (like extra lab results or new/complicated medical conditions) or if it’s been more than year since our last visit (we’ll discuss this with you before you book a follow-up so you know what to expect).
-
How much does the consultation cost?Consultation fees reflect the average time our pharmacists dedicate to each consultation: 5 hours for each full-length consultation and 3 hours to each follow-up consultation. This includes preparing for your consultation, hosting your consultation, and creating your Notes and Customized Wellness Plan after your consultation. Full- length consultation fee is $250 Follow-up consultation fee is $150 A bundled package is available: $360 (save $40) when you buy the package that includes both a full-length and a follow-up consultation.
-
Does the consultation fee include testing? No. Testing fees are paid directly to the lab provider, which may be a mail-in lab, a provider’s in-office lab, or a stand-alone on-demand lab facility. Our pharmacists will provide customized testing recommendations once your consultation is confirmed.
-
Does Hoey Apothecary offer lab services?Hoey Apothecary is a pick-up point for ZRT Laboratory’s at-home testing kits: please visit the pharmacy or call 608.221.4639 to request a kit be mailed to you (nominal shipping fees apply). Hoey Apothecary does not offer phlebotomy services (i.e., traditional blood-draw) but can refer to local on-demand lab facilities.
-
Should I do lab work before scheduling my consultation? We recommend scheduling your consultation first so we can provide customized testing guidance. Most patients will decide to complete a ZRT Laboratory saliva test kit, which requires about a month to collect and mail samples and allow for lab processing: requesting a consultation at least one month from now increases the likelihood of having results in time for your consultation.
-
How do I know what labs to get?Within one business day of submitting your appointment request, your consultation will be confirmed and you’ll be invited to complete an online symptom self-evaluation. Our pharmacist will review your evaluation and provide customized testing recommendations. Most often, we will recommend focusing on EITHER saliva results OR bloodwork during the initial consultation; other labs can be discussed during a follow-up consultation.
-
What kind of testing might be recommended? Most patients will be advised to complete saliva testing, traditional bloodwork, or both. Saliva testing is an excellent tool to assess hormones and adrenal function. A DIY at-home test kit from ZRT Laboratory can be obtained from the pharmacy (or can be mailed for a nominal shipping fee). Most patients need about 4 weeks to obtain the kit; collect and mail saliva samples; and allow for lab processing. (Women who have monthly cycles may need to allow more time.) Lab fees are not included in the consultation fee and will be paid directly to ZRT Lab. Thyroid and metabolic function must be assessed with traditional bloodwork; costs vary based on the facility’s fees. Bloodwork is more likely to be covered by insurance if ordered by your medical provider; you are welcome to share our customized bloodwork-recommendations with your provider and ask for an order or we can refer several local on-demand lab facilities.
-
How much will the testing cost? The most useful saliva lab panels range from $130-295 (updated Nov 2024). Medical insurance doesn’t usually cover saliva tests. Check out this page (especially the “General FAQs” section) for common questions about ZRT’s tests, insurance coverage, etc. Bloodwork is more likely to be covered by insurance if ordered by your medical provider; you are welcome to share our customized bloodwork-recommendations with your provider and ask for an order. Alternatively, you may visit an on-demand lab facility; these facilities do not bill insurance, but the non-insurance price is lower than the price billed to insurance. Costs vary based on the facility’s fees.
-
How do I get lab results? If a ZRT salivary test kit is obtained from the pharmacy, results are released to the pharmacy and will be shared with you via our secure online portal, called Practice Better. Lab work obtained elsewhere will need to be shared with via the secure portal at least 3 days prior to your appointment. Detailed instructions on sharing results will be provided within the portal.
-
Can I use my medical/pharmacy insurance and/or FSA/HSA funds?Fun fact: Eligibility for flexible-spending account (FSA) and health-savings account (HSA) funds is determined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)! *Bloodwork is more likely to be covered by insurance if ordered by your medical provider; you are welcome to share our customized bloodwork-recommendations with your provider and ask for an order. **Prescription insurance coverage for compounded medications depends on the individual prescription-insurance plan; you may be able to find information about this on the insurer’s website. We can bill your insurance company for any prescriptions we receive and provide final-cost information (with or without insurance coverage) before proceeding. ***FSA/HSA funds may be used for prescription therapies regardless of whether prescription insurance covers them.
-
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my consultation? We understand life happens, and we’ll do our best to accommodate. Clear expectations and policies are also helpful. A consultation may be rescheduled or cancelled ONE TIME and with at least 48 hours’ notice without penalty. Subsequent requests (and any requests made with less than 48 hours’ notice) will result in forfeiture of the consultation fee. Cancellation/reschedule requests are made within our online secure portal.
-
Can you prescribe compounded medications? No. Pharmacists are not licensed to prescribe medications. The notes of our consultation are for informational purposes only and are neither diagnostic nor prescriptive in nature. Rather, they are intended for educational purposes to guide the conversation between you and your medical providers, who are ultimately responsible for all treatment decisions.Notes from your consultation can be sent to the provider of your choice and will include any applicable lab results and prescription recommendations. Your licensed medical provider can review these notes, consider our recommendations, and authorize any prescription therapies.
-
What if I don’t have a medical provider or need a new provider? We enjoy collaborating with many providers in the area and would be happy to refer you to a practice that might be a good fit with your medical concerns, goals, and priorities.
-
What kinds of therapies might be recommended?Every recommendation is 100% customized to a single person and incorporates whole-person care. Your consultation will result in a customized Wellness Plan that will likely include non-pharmaceutical options (lifestyle adjustments and dietary choices), nutritional supplements, and compounded prescription therapies. Every aspect of the Wellness Plan will be revisited during follow-up consultations and further customized to provide continued, ongoing support.
-
What are compounded medications? We’re so glad you asked! Please visit the “About” page of our website and scroll down to the “Compounding” section for more information.
-
Do I have to come into the pharmacy for a consultation?Nope! Consultations are only hosted virtually via a secure online portal called Practice Better. You can log into your (free) account from any device with internet access (including your phone, there’s an app for that!). The portal enables a secure video-meeting that can be accessed from the comfort, safety, convenience, and privacy of wherever you choose to be.
-
How is my private health information managed?Protecting and securing your private health information is of utmost importance to us. We utilize an online health-record program called Practice Better, similar to programs like Epic’s MyChart your other providers might utilize. Practice Better is HIPAA-compliant and utilizes several forms of encryption to keep your information secure. After your consultation is confirmed, you’ll activate a (free) account and we’ll use that for all communications: form completion, document sharing, private messaging, reminders/updates, video-consultations, etc. The Practice Better portal is available on any device with internet access (including via an app called “Better,” available for both Android and Apple users).
-
I’m not very tech-y, are there other options? To protect your private health information (and remain compliant with federal law), we use a secure online portal called Practice Better for most communications; our patients describe the portal as very intuitive and user-friendly. However, if the portal creates a barrier, we can rely on other tools: printed information can be provided for in-store pick-up or can be mailed to you. Email is not a secure communication method and cannot be used for private health information. Consultations can be hosted by phone instead of by video meeting. (This limits some capability, like screen-sharing to view lab results.) In-person consultations are not available since our consultation pharmacist only works remotely.
-
Where can I learn more about the therapies you recommend? Please join us for free webinars on some of our most popular topics: view the schedule and register at our “Upcoming Webinars” webpage. We also have webpages dedicated to low-dose naltrexone therapy and general pharmacy/compounding information.
-
I’m ready to get started! What do I do next?Great, we’re ready, too! Scroll down and click the “Request Appointment” button next to the package or individual session you’d like to purchase. (Consider picking a date at least one month from today to allow time for testing, see above.) Session requests are typically confirmed within one business day, at which time you’ll receive several emails to 1) confirm the appointment; 2) activate your (free) Practice Better account; and 3) complete the online symptom evaluation. Be sure to check your Spam/Junk box if these don’t arrive in your Inbox.

I still have questions, who can I contact? Please email Info@HoeyRx.com or call 608.221.4639 during regular business hours.
We can consult with you or a loved one on almost any health concern, including:
Female Hormone Balance
From hot flashes to mood swings and from low energy to weight gain, hormones impact many aspects of a woman’s life. Hormone balance is essential to a healthy, happy, productive lifestyle at any age.
Male Hormone Balance
Hormones regulate a man’s energy levels, sleep patterns, muscle strength, sexual desire and performance, weight, and general sense of well-being. Hormone balance is essential to a healthy, happy, productive lifestyle at any age.
Thyroid Function
Thyroid-related symptoms are common despite “normal” lab results. A thorough assessment of symptoms and more-specific blood tests can provide a different picture of thyroid function and how it can be improved.
Sleep Disruption
When you can’t sleep, everything is harder. Whether you need more sleep, better sleep, or both, our pharmacists can address your sleep challenges.
Stress, Anxiety & Adrenal Function
In our stressful lives, the brain can trigger the stress-response too often or too much until it literally wears itself out. This can lead to many problems such as fatigue, poor sleep, and weight gain. It is important to assess the health of the adrenal system so that repairs can be made if necessary. Healthy adrenals are vital components of hormone balance. When our adrenals are functioning properly, we can reach optimal health.
Important information about scheduling a consultation:
Pricing & Fees
Consultation fees are based on our pharmacists' dedicated time and expertise. The initial full-length consultation is scheduled for a full hour. If follow-up consultations are warranted, they are typically shorter and cost less.
75 Minute Consultation = $250 45 Minute Follow-Up = $150 Initial Consult & Follow-Up = $360
Hormone Testing
Saliva and blood-spot (finger-prick) tests are very helpful in assessing hormone balance. We highly recommend you complete these tests before your consultation so the results can be considered during our conversation. A DIY at-home test-kit can be obtained from the pharmacy or mailed at no cost. When scheduling your consultation, please allow at least 2 weeks for sample-collection, mailing, analysis, and delivery of results (women who are still having monthly cycles may need to allow more time). After requesting your consultation, our pharmacist will review your symptom evaluation and discuss which test-package is best for you: payment is made directly to the lab provider (ZRT Laboratory). Check out this page for commonly asked questions about ZRT Laboratory’s tests, insurance coverage, etc. Your consultation can proceed without test results, but a follow-up consultation will be needed to discuss test results.
Insurance Coverage
Unfortunately, most insurance plans do not reimburse for pharmacists’ consultation services.
Privacy & Security
Protecting and securing your medical information is of utmost importance to us. We utilize an online medical record program called Practice Better, which is similar to programs like MyChart your doctor might use. Practice Better is HIPAA-compliant and utilizes several forms of encryption to keep your information secure. You will get more information about Practice Better once your consultation is booked.
